BeWell

BeWell is a Good Guides initiative, in which we will be building one well per year in a developing country.

Each well built will be to honour, tribute, and remember loved ones affected by various ailments and diseases.

785 M

People lack access to clean water. That’s one in 10 people on the planet.

200 HRS

Are spent every day by women and girls hauling water.

6 KM

Walked every day by the average woman in rural Africa to haul 40 pounds of water.

Why Water?

BECAUSE GOOD HEALTH IS DESERVED BY ALL.

785 million people lack access to clean, safe water, with 144 million relying on surface water sources such as ponds or rivers.

Contaminated sources are frequently carriers of water-borne (and potentially fatal) diseases including typhoid and cholera.

Diarrhea caused by polluted drinking water kills approximately 485,000 people each year.

Malnutrition, which is a leading cause of illness and death among children under the age of five in Sub-Saharan Africa, can be caused by diarrheal disease.

DUE TO THE FACT THAT EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE EDUCATED.

Students, particularly girls, can spend hours a day collecting water for drinking and bathing, time that they cannot devote to learning to read and write or playing with their peers.

Water-related illnesses, which are caused by contaminated water and/or poor WASH practices, are a major factor in lower school attendance and enrollment in developing nations.

DUE TO THE FACT THAT EVERYONE DESERVES TO SUCCEED.

Clean water not only benefits health, but it also boosts educational participation and promotes gender equality.

Women and girls bear a disproportionate amount of the burden of gathering water. Women have more time and opportunities to seek an education, care for their family, and create income with a nearby water supply, helping them break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential.
